How Many Calories Can One Burn Belly Dancing?
I often receive this question from my online students, especially those who are relatively new to training. As you know I don’t believe that belly dance is a magic pill to make calories melt away, although mass media often presents it as so. Sorry to disappoint you. It’s not about any particular dance s͟͟t͟͟y͟͟l͟͟e͟͟. Its about the i͟͟n͟͟t͟͟e͟͟n͟͟s͟͟i͟͟t͟͟y͟͟ of your training.
Yes, belly dance can serve such purpose too, but only if you approach your training more as a cardio workout. In this case, it can reach roughy up to 350 calories per hour, or even more. But if it’s a less intense version with slow moves or constant stops, then it will be around 200 calories per hour, as many other slow paced activities.
Basically, the higher your heart rate is during any physical activity, the more calories you burn.
In your own belly dance training do you prefer high intense sweaty sessions, or slow paced dance classes?

About two years ago one dancer decided to copy my Persian dance choreography from YouTube, and not only to perform, but to t͟͟e͟͟a͟͟c͟͟h͟͟ it at one cultural festival in Italy presenting as her own dance creation. When I saw a video from her workshop and contacted her…
Three most common rhythms that we hear in belly dance song are Maqsum, Saidi and Masmudi Saghir (also known as Baladi rhythm). Yet many dancers keep confusing them because they sound very similar, and have the same 4/4 time signature. Moreover, a drummer sometimes gets bored of playing the same rhythm, so he may even start interchanging them. Their 4/4 time nature makes it super easy to switch from one rhythm to another. So how can you easily memorize and differentiate those rhythms?..
